The Jerrelyn Redmond Jackson Veasley Lifetime Athletic and Scholastic Award Endowed Fund at the Community Foundation for Mississippi has reached an exciting milestone: awarding its first award. This spring, the fund awarded $1,000 to Journey Harris, a graduating senior at Kosciusko High School.
Journey’s path to Kosciusko was unexpected—transferring in her senior year—but she quickly became a standout member of the Lady Whippets basketball team. Known for her versatility, poise, and leadership on and off the court, Journey made an immediate impact, becoming the team’s second-leading scorer and a key part of the team’s success.
The Jerrelyn Redmond Jackson Veasley Lifetime Athletic and Scholastic Award Endowed Fund honors the late Jerrelyn Redmond Jackson Veasley, who spent her life inspiring others through education, athletics, and mentorship. Journey embodies these same values—demonstrating character, commitment, and excellence. In the fall, she plans to attend the University of Mississippi.
Envisioned by Mrs. Jackson-Veasley and created by her family, the fund supports students who exemplify her belief in achievement through determination and heart.
“It is such an honor to do this for my mom. God truly sent me the perfect mother,” said Jerra Jackson, daughter of Mrs. Jackson-Veasley and fund advisor. “I hate that she’s not here with me, but I know she’s always with me in my heart, still guiding me to do amazing and meaningful things, like this award in her name.”
“My mom always showed so much love and support for Kosciusko School District even in her final days,” she added. I saw firsthand how deeply she cared for this school district. This award is a reflection of how much she poured her heart into her students and players, always encouraging them to dream bigger. It keeps her legacy alive by lifting up young women in basketball, just as she did throughout her life.”
With Journey Harris as its first recipient, the fund’s mission has begun exactly as it was intended—with promise, pride, and the power of a young person stepping into her future. Read more about the fund’s origin here.
